Regarding GIMP 2.10

The Ubuntu Studio team would like to congratulate GIMP on the release of version 2.10! It has been years since the last major release of GIMP, and this one is a good one.

Unfortunately for our users that use MyPaint and GIMP, MyPaint (1.2) uses libmypaint 1.2. GIMP 2.10 uses libmypaint 1.3. The two libmypaint versions cannot currently be installed at the same time. This means that, until we devise a solution or MyPaint 1.3 is released (whichever comes first) MyPaint and GIMP 2.10 cannot be installed at the same time. This discrepancy is causing problems in the official Ubuntu repositories and in upstream Debian Testing.

The bug reports are as follows:

Rest assured, we are working on a solution. If you need to have both MyPaint and GIMP 2.10 installed simultaneously, until a solution is released, we recommend watching this page for a SNAP version of GIMP 2.10. Please note that at this time there is no upgrade path from a .deb package (such as GIMP included with Ubuntu Studio) to a SNAP package, so you may wish to uninstall GIMP 2.8, though with the SNAP both can be installed simultaneously.

Once we have a solution, it will land in the development version of Ubuntu Studio 18.10, and we hope to do an “exceptional” Stable Release Update for Ubuntu Studio 18.04.

We do apologize for this inconvenience, and we hope to get it straightened-out as soon as possible.

Clarification on Non-LTS Status of Ubuntu Studio 18.04

For everyone who is asking why 18.04 is not an LTS, we want to be clear: we are very much in need of volunteers to help with development. We especially need help with packaging and documentation.

This entire project is run by volunteers. Nobody on the Ubuntu Studio team is employed by Canonical. We do this out of passion for the project.

That said, we simply do not currently have the manpower that it takes to support a Long-Term Support version. If you would like to change that for future releases, please help!

What this means: There will be no further versions of the Ubuntu Studio 18.04 ISO image file. There will be no backports other than those items backported in the official Ubuntu repositories. That said, the Ubuntu stack (including lowlatency kernel) will be supported for 5 years. So, for those (especially 16.04 users) fearing they can’t upgrade to 18.04 because it’s not LTS, fear not. Your packages will continue to update.

For the team, this means that our focus is on 18.10 going forward. We want to put a lot of energy into making it great and even looking to making some changes. We did not want to do this for 18.04 because with big changes comes bugs, and we don’t have the manpower to be chasing those bugs. 18.04 is a solid release that is evolutionary from 17.10. Evolutionary, not revolutionary.

Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Released

We are happy to announce the release of our latest version, Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Bionic Beaver! Unlike the other Ubuntu flavors, this release of Ubuntu Studio is not a Long-Term Suppport (LTS) release. As a regular release, it will be supported for 9 months. Although it is not a Long-Term Support release, it is still based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which means the components will be supported as usual for a LTS release.

Since it’s just out, you may experience some issues, so you might want to wait a bit before upgrading. Please see the release notes for a complete list of changes and known issues.

Changes in this Release

There are no notable changes in this release since 17.10 Artful Aardvark. Information on newer packages can be found in the release notes.

Ubuntu Studio is maintained by a very small team and we are actively seeking new contributors. We are looking for developers, packagers and testers. Even if you are interested in contributing outside these areas, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your contribution is precious regardless of your field of activity. Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Release Candidate

The Release Candidate for Ubuntu Studio 18.04 is ready for testing.

Download it here

There are some known issues:

  • Volume label still set to Beta
  • base-files still not the final version
  • kernel will have (at least) one more revision

Please report any bugs using ubuntu-bug {package name}.

Final release is scheduled to be released on April 26, 2018.

Ubuntu Studio Development Meeting: April 7, 2018

On April 7, 2018, the Ubuntu Studio Development Team met. Among the items discussed were the following:
  • Looking into changing or adding wallpaper for 18.04
  • Install-time package selection bug fixed, request for testers.
  • ubuntustudio-controls to be updated for 18.10 to add the following features:
    • set cpu governor, turn on/off Intel Boost
    • choose audio device
    • run jack from session start (or not)
    • hotplugging USB mics selecting a non-standard set of outputs for pulse-jack bridging
    • Using more than one audio device even if internal
    • bridging ALSA midi to jack midi
    • a “Safely remove USB Audio Device” button
    • Future improvements to include tabs for video use or graphics setups.
  • Change in default Desktop Environment, or adding a Desktop Environment selection at install time is being considered for 18.10. Those discussed included
    • Gnome Shell
    • KDE Plasma
    • MATE
  • Adaptation of Ubuntu MATE welcome app for Ubuntu Studio is being considered for 18.10, would replace “ubuntustudio-installer”.
Anyone who can, please install the latest Daily ISO to test the install-time package selection. This is our final push to the RC on April 19th, so we need to find the bugs and get them gone.

Ubuntu Studio 18.04 Bionic Beaver Beta is released!

The beta of the upcoming release of Ubuntu Studio 18.04 is ready for testing.

You may find the images at cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/bionic/beta-2/. More information can be found in the Beta Release Notes.

Reporting Bugs

If you find any bugs with this release, please report them, and take your time in making the bug report as well formulated as possible. You’ll need an account at launchpad.net. Making a bug report can be done from the terminal with the command: ubuntu-bug [package_name] (replace [package_name] with the name of the package you’re reporting the bug against).

Tagging the bugs with “bionic” and “ubuntustudio-beta” will also help us find them, but a mail to our mailing list with the link to the bug will also help!
