Ubuntu Studio 16.04.1 Released

A new point release of the Xenial Xerus LTS has been released. As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs. Please see the 16.04.1 change summary for more information.

Users of Ubuntu Studio 14.04 will soon be offered an automatic upgrade to 16.04.1 via Update Manager. For further information about upgrading, see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XenialUpgrades

Ubuntu Studio is happy to announce that backports are going to be rolling out soon and the first one will be Ardour. Backports are newer versions of applications, ported back to stable versions of the system.

For example in the case of Ardour, Ubuntu Studio users running 14.04 or 16.04 will be able to have the latest version, available in 16.10 (development), without upgrading the entire system.

This is a great thing, and with great power comes great responsibility: Backports have to be manually installed by the user, and the user will be required to carefully think about the possible consequences.

The new version may be better, but it could also have some new bugs not found yet, and sometimes the new version might use a newer data format that is not backwards compatible.

This means that if you are in the middle of a project, backporting your tools can potentially compromise your projects deadline, or worse.

Whatever mistake you make, you can of course always roll back, but remember: Better safe than sorry – always back up your project data before installing a backport.

In order to be able to provide you with backports for other pieces of software shipped with Ubuntu Studio, the development team could need a hand. If you have a little spare time that you can share with the community, here is how you can help out.

New Ubuntu Studio Release 16.04 and New Project Lead!

New Project Lead

In January 2016 we had an election for a new project lead, and the winner was Set Hallström, who will be taking over the project lead position right after this release. He will be continuing for another two years until the next election in 2018.
The team of developers has also seen a positive increase lately, which bodes well for the future. So, all in all, this release marks a new page in the history of Ubuntu Studio and makes the distribution as strong as it has ever been.

16.04 Xenial Xerus Released!

We’re happy to announce our latest LTS release. Ubuntu Studio 16.04 will be supported for three years. Since it’s just out, you may experience some problems. Read about them and our full list of changes in the release notes at our wiki.

Short list of new features:

  • ubuntustudio-controls rewritten from scratch (also in Wily) for administering realtime privilege for user.
  • Desktop setup more closely synced with Xubuntu for this release
  • Changed from libav to ffmpeg
  • A few changes in our multimedia package selection

We are always looking for contributors. No developing skills needed, and for those who do aspire to do developing, we will teach you. Just head over to ubuntustudio.org/contribute to find out how to get started.

Find any bugs?

If you find any bugs, please take the time to report them. Make the bug report as clear and specific as possible, and work together with developers on finding out what the problem is, so we can find a way to fix it.

Where is YOUR entry?

Ubuntustudio 16.04 will be officially released in April 2016. As this will be a Long Term Support version, we are most anxious to offer an excellent experience on the desktop. Therefore, the Ubuntustudio community will host a wallpaper design contest! The contest is open to Digital Artists, Designers, Dilettantes and Doodlers, especially Ubuntustudio enthusiasts. We hope to collect the coolest, most beautiful, inspiring, innovative and downright slick desktop wallpapers. Each artist may submit up to 4 pieces. The Ubuntustudio community will vote on and select 16 final Ubuntustudio Wallpapers! (See what we did there? 16? 4? Clever, eh?)

If you are enjoying Edubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Kylin, Ubuntu-Mate, Ubuntu-Gnome, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu or Ubuntu-Server we formally invite and welcome your contributions as well!

Project Lead Vote Dates

We have decided on the dates for the the new project lead vote. The vote will take place during the week from 1st to 6th of February. Only active Ubuntu Studio contributors will be allowed to vote.

New candidates will be accepted up until the week before the vote (Jan 25th), so that the Ubuntu Studio team will have time to review the candidates before the vote.

Project Lead Vote 2016

Ubuntu Studio is going to have the first ever vote for the project lead position. Thinking about candidating, or know someone who should? Read on…

When is the vote?

The vote is preliminary set to January 2016, but will take place no later than April 2016, when the new project lead period begins.

Who is allowed to be candidate?

Anyone. But, experience in packaging, as well as experience with multimedia production on Linux platforms is strongly favored.

How often is the vote going to be?

The vote will be every two years, before the next LTS is released. So, each new project lead will be responsible for the development of a single LTS release.

Who will vote?

Not entirely decided yet, but most likely it will be all of the people actively contributing to Ubuntu Studio development currently.

Candidate Requirements

  • Candidate needs to be active and available for communication with the Ubuntu Studio community, at least through the ubuntu-studio-devel mail list. In some cases IRC is also required.
  • Candidate needs some form of experience in software development in the Linux world, preferably within Debian or Ubuntu.
  • If Candidate is lacking skills in Debian packaging or lacking knowledge of the Debian Policy, at least one other person with those skills needs to commit for the whole 2 year period. Otherwise, the project lead will require outside help for maintaining Ubuntu Studio, which is not optimal.

Announcing your candidacy

First, make sure to have an account at https://login.ubuntu.com/, and login to http://wiki.ubuntu.com so you can create and edit pages.

To announce your candidacy, you need to:

  • Create a candidate wiki page.
  • Announce to our ubuntu-studio-devel mail list that you are candidating.

Creating the wiki page

To create the page you can start by editing the page UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadVote2016. Add the link [[UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadVote2016/<yournickname>]] (moin syntax – replace <yournickname> with a name of your choice) below the heading Candidates for the project lead position 2016-2018.

Once the link is added, save the page and click on the link. Since the page to where the link goes does not exist yet, you will be asked to create one. Use the template UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadCandidateTemplate.

Make sure to write as much about yourself relevant to the project lead position, i.e. what your experiences are with multimedia production on Linux, and what kind of software development experience you have.

Confirming your candidacy on ubuntu-studio-devel mail list

This is just to make sure no one misses to read your wiki page, once you wish to announce your candidacy. So, “Hi, I’m candidating” is enough. But, your thread is also a great place to ask further questions, if someone has any, and just a good way to get to know you.

Most of the work we do does not require any special skills, so more or less anyone can contribute!

To start contributing right away, simply read ubuntustudio.org/contribute and follow instructions. If you’d like to get up to speed on what is happening right now, please read on.

In order to survive as a volunteer project, we need contributors of all skill levels

Ubuntu Studio is and has always been a volunteer project created by enthusiasts to provide a free and open source operating system aimed at multimedia production. And in order to continue existing, we need continuous reinforcements of new contributors.

There are probably many reasons to why Ubuntu Studio is not attracting a lot of contributors. This time around we are trying to address some of that and really trying to reach out to people. If you want to help with this, please spread this post in any way you can!

Help us develop Xenial Xerus, the next LTS

A new 6 month cycle of development begins, and we are in desperate need of contributors!

We have just released Wily Werewolf, and are beginning development on the next LTS version of Ubuntu Studio , so you would be participating from the start. We are about 6 months from release. You may help us out for the whole period, or only parts of it – this is up to you.

We will need help in these areas:

  • Testing (ISO and application testing)
  • PR and Support (communicate with the community)
  • Documentation (both written, and video)
  • Artwork (desktop look, website look)
  • Packaging and Application development

If you think you can assist us in any way, please read ubuntustudio.org/contribute and begin from there!

Project lead vote in January 2016

Would you like to participate in deciding who is to lead the Ubuntu Studio project for a two year period, starting April 2016? Or, are you perhaps someone with the drive to take on the project yourself? In both cases, you should start by involving yourself in the development process.

During the following weeks we are preparing the procedure for the whole thing. How candidacies are to be announced and evaluated, and how we do the actual vote. All of this is something you can participate in.
