Project Lead Vote Dates

We have decided on the dates for the the new project lead vote. The vote will take place during the week from 1st to 6th of February. Only active Ubuntu Studio contributors will be allowed to vote.

New candidates will be accepted up until the week before the vote (Jan 25th), so that the Ubuntu Studio team will have time to review the candidates before the vote.

So, if you’re thinking about running for project lead, now is the time to announce your candidacy! See this earlier post for more details.

Ubuntu Studio is going to have the first ever vote for the project lead position. Thinking about candidating, or know someone who should? Read on…

When is the vote?

The vote is preliminary set to January 2016, but will take place no later than April 2016, when the new project lead period begins.

Who is allowed to be candidate?

Anyone. But, experience in packaging, as well as experience with multimedia production on Linux platforms is strongly favored.

How often is the vote going to be?

The vote will be every two years, before the next LTS is released. So, each new project lead will be responsible for the development of a single LTS release.

Who will vote?

Not entirely decided yet, but most likely it will be all of the people actively contributing to Ubuntu Studio development currently.

Candidate Requirements

  • Candidate needs to be active and available for communication with the Ubuntu Studio community, at least through the ubuntu-studio-devel mail list. In some cases IRC is also required.
  • Candidate needs some form of experience in software development in the Linux world, preferably within Debian or Ubuntu.
  • If Candidate is lacking skills in Debian packaging or lacking knowledge of the Debian Policy, at least one other person with those skills needs to commit for the whole 2 year period. Otherwise, the project lead will require outside help for maintaining Ubuntu Studio, which is not optimal.

Announcing your candidacy

First, make sure to have an account at https://login.ubuntu.com/, and login to http://wiki.ubuntu.com so you can create and edit pages.

To announce your candidacy, you need to:

  • Create a candidate wiki page.
  • Announce to our ubuntu-studio-devel mail list that you are candidating.

Creating the wiki page

To create the page you can start by editing the page UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadVote2016. Add the link [[UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadVote2016/<yournickname>]] (moin syntax – replace <yournickname> with a name of your choice) below the heading Candidates for the project lead position 2016-2018.

Once the link is added, save the page and click on the link. Since the page to where the link goes does not exist yet, you will be asked to create one. Use the template UbuntuStudio/ProjectLeadCandidateTemplate.

Make sure to write as much about yourself relevant to the project lead position, i.e. what your experiences are with multimedia production on Linux, and what kind of software development experience you have.

Confirming your candidacy on ubuntu-studio-devel mail list

This is just to make sure no one misses to read your wiki page, once you wish to announce your candidacy. So, “Hi, I’m candidating” is enough. But, your thread is also a great place to ask further questions, if someone has any, and just a good way to get to know you.

Most of the work we do does not require any special skills, so more or less anyone can contribute!

To start contributing right away, simply read ubuntustudio.org/contribute and follow instructions. If you’d like to get up to speed on what is happening right now, please read on.

In order to survive as a volunteer project, we need contributors of all skill levels

Ubuntu Studio is and has always been a volunteer project created by enthusiasts to provide a free and open source operating system aimed at multimedia production. And in order to continue existing, we need continuous reinforcements of new contributors.

There are probably many reasons to why Ubuntu Studio is not attracting a lot of contributors. This time around we are trying to address some of that and really trying to reach out to people. If you want to help with this, please spread this post in any way you can!

Help us develop Xenial Xerus, the next LTS

A new 6 month cycle of development begins, and we are in desperate need of contributors!

We have just released Wily Werewolf, and are beginning development on the next LTS version of Ubuntu Studio , so you would be participating from the start. We are about 6 months from release. You may help us out for the whole period, or only parts of it – this is up to you.

We will need help in these areas:

  • Testing (ISO and application testing)
  • PR and Support (communicate with the community)
  • Documentation (both written, and video)
  • Artwork (desktop look, website look)
  • Packaging and Application development

If you think you can assist us in any way, please read ubuntustudio.org/contribute and begin from there!

Project lead vote in January 2016

Would you like to participate in deciding who is to lead the Ubuntu Studio project for a two year period, starting April 2016? Or, are you perhaps someone with the drive to take on the project yourself? In both cases, you should start by involving yourself in the development process.

During the following weeks we are preparing the procedure for the whole thing. How candidacies are to be announced and evaluated, and how we do the actual vote. All of this is something you can participate in.

Precise and linux-lowlatency-3.2 EOL

Since 3 years has become a new standard as the support period for Ubuntu flavor LTS releases, we decided to end support for Ubuntu Studio 12.04 Precise Pangolin after 3 years.
While we do that, we also end support for linux-lowlatency 3.2. The most recent update will be the last one.

If you are still running Ubuntu Studio 12.04, you are adviced to upgrade to the latest LTS (14.04).

Reporting Bugs

If you find any bugs with this release, please report them, and take your time in making the bug report as well formulated as possible. You’ll need an account at launchpad.net. Making a bug report can be done from the terminal with the command: ubuntu-bug package_name (replace package_name with the name of the package you’re reporting the bug against).

Ubuntu Studio 12.04.4 Precise Pangolin point release

Another point release of Ubuntu Studio 12.04 is out. For Ubuntu Studio users this is merely a new ISO build containing all security updates up until now. If you have 12.04 already installed, you will have received all updates from regular system updates.

Dear Ubuntu Studio users,

The Ubuntu Studio team proudly announces the immediate release of Ubuntu Studio 13.10.

This exciting release incorporates the new features listed below.

* A new menu structure which works on any desktop environment. Len Ovens and Mish did a great job on moving various apps to the right submenu and creating new menu icons.

* A new package named ubuntustudio-installer, which allows any person to install our metapackages and can fit into any desktop environment.

* Instead of a settings menu, we have fitted in a new Settings Manager, with all settings in one place.

* When you are in the GRUB Menu, the boot item for Ubuntu Studio will show “Ubuntu Studio” instead of “Ubuntu”. Also, the latest -lowlatency kernel will be always the default boot item in the GRUB boot loader.

* The XFCE session in the LightDM is removed to avoid any confusion with the Ubuntu Studio session.

* A new wallpaper, made by our artwork lead, Zak Frappan.

* The linux-lowlatency kernel has been updated to upstream Linux kernel version 3.11.3.

* We have added GNOME Orca for accessibility purposes, and also Ardour 3 for audio production.

We strongly recommend users currently using Ubuntu Studio 13.04 to upgrade to this release.

Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Release Candidate Call for Testing

Dear Ubuntu Studio developers, testers and users,

We are about to release Ubuntu Studio 13.10 on the coming Thursday. However, we are desperately in need for testing. Please help us test the release candidate images!

Testcases for the amd64 images are in http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55592/testcases,
while i386 image testcases can be found in http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55593/testcases.
Please also do the upgrade testcases as well, linked in http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55391/testcases (for amd64) and http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55392/testcases (for i386).

The latest image is available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/current. We recommend you to use zsync to download the image, as the images will be updated quite frequently in the coming few days.

Ubuntu Studio 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) Beta 1 testing

Dear Ubuntu Studio Developers, Contributors and Users,

The first beta of Ubuntu Studio’s development release, Ubuntu Studio 13.10 (Saucy Salamander), will be released on Thursday, 5th September, 2013. I would like to call for testers.

This release is a very exciting one as we have added a new set of features to the development release, including:

* A new menu structure which works on any desktop environment. Len Ovens and Mish did a great job on moviing various apps to the right submenu and creating new menu icons.

* A new package named ubuntustudio-installer, which allows any person to install our metapackages and can fit into any desktop environment.

* Instead of a settings menu, we have fitted in a new Settings Manager, with all settings in one place.
Grub fixes

* When you are in the GRUB Menu, the boot item for Ubuntu Studio will show “Ubuntu Studio” instead of “Ubuntu”. Also, the latest -lowlatency kernel will be always the default boot item in the GRUB boot loader.

* The XFCE session in the LightDM is removed to avoid any confusion with the Ubuntu Studio session.

Find the testcases in the Ubuntu ISO QA Tracker (http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/302/builds) for Ubuntu Studio and follow them (along with https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough as a reference document) to test the images.

After you have tested them, report the results in the ISO QA Tracker.

Make sure you DO report any bugs you found and report them using ubuntu-bug in your terminal or Launchpad (https://launchpad.net).
